Our Management Structure

In order to give as many students as possible the opportunity to find their way in the “New Space” field, AUXSPACE is divided into six departments: Launch & Land, Orbit, Explore, Habitat, Science and Management.

Launch & Land

The department „Launch and Land“ focuses on Rocketry, and the landing of payloads in form of re-entry vehicles or the rocket itself. Furthermore, in reference to the topic of launch vehicles and landers, we differentiate between different sizes of rockets and other launch vehicles and various propulsion technologies and manufacturing processes, to ensure adequate research: While a medium sized rocket might bring advantages such as fewer bureaucratic hurdles in order to test new technologies, a large variant allows us to carry heavier payloads or fly higher.

In addition to the construction of the vehicles themselves, the corresponding test and ground equipment will also be developed and built by our team at Auxspace.

Orbit

The department „Orbit“ focuses on the development, construction and operation of satellites and stratospheric ballons. In the realm of aerospace, balloons and satellites are comparable, however the operation and costs are much more manageable, making the balloon a good platform for testing technologies for a satellite.

The Cubesat is an ideal satellite platform for research. This pico-satellite with a square base area of 10cm x 10cm and a length of 10cm to 30cm can be developed and operated cost-effectively.

Explore

The department „Explore“ focuses on the robotic and remote-controlled exploration of unknown areas, be it with a rover, a drone or a submarine (ROV). Similar to the “Habitat” division, there are many opportunities for synergies between terrestrial and extraterrestrial areas of application. For example, rovers and drones developed for Mars can just as easily be used in disaster areas or to explore a damaged reactor.

At first glance, it is difficult to make the connection between submarines and space travel. On closer inspection, however, both the deep sea and outer space are areas that have not yet been explored to any great extent. A submarine offers low-threshold opportunities to research the power supply, communication and autonomy of exploration vehicles on earth and then transfer them to space-specific applications.

Habitat

The department „Habitat“ will focus on every aspect to make life possible in remote locations such as the moon, mars or a harsh environment on earth such as antartica or a dessert.
In addition to the actual living space, the habitat, research will also be conducted into the production of food and the provision and treatment of air and water as well as concepts for suits for working outside the habitat.

The fact that not everything needed to build habitats can be taken from the earth poses a major challenge in this area. Accordingly, the possibilities and raw materials on site must be used to build habitats. There are a wide range of research possibilities here, from the use of in-situ, i.e. locally available, raw materials such as sand/regolith to habitats made of water ice and foldable or inflatable modules.

The special thing about this sector is that the findings are not only applicable to extraterrestrial regions, but also directly here on Earth, whether in regions that have become uninhabitable due to the climate or in disaster areas where the infrastructure has collapsed.

Science

The department „Science“ focuses on relevant research to current topics, such as micro-gravity or material sciences. This division is concerned with the acquisition of new knowledge and research. This includes general basic research into new materials and substances, the behavior of fluids under acceleration (sloshing) and the development of new and better propellants.

However, research directly related to space, such as the effects of weightlessness or reduced gravity on people, machines and materials, will also be carried out in this area. As already mentioned, there are many opportunities for cooperation with other sectors in this field

Management

The “Management” division is primarily responsible for organizing the life and work of the association. This includes project management in the other divisions, the planning of events, the organization and administration of members, finances as well as public relations. To ensure further development and continued existence of the association the cultivation of new and refined sponsors and partners is a crucial part of the “Management” division.
